BOROUGH OF NEW LYNN

A meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council held last evening was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. A. T. Reiman.

The Ljnndale Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club wrote offering to conduct sports meetinge in the New Lynn Domain when isarne was completed, and ottered to give the council the net proceeds from each meeting towards the expenses of upkeep.

The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association wrote advising that the State Advances Corporation could not pay rates on reverted securities before March but would pay a substantial portion of rates on houses under the Government housing scheme before March 31 each year.

Advice was received from the Hon. H. G. R. Mason that the tender of Mr. T. F. Playfair had been accepted for the erection of a further nine houses in New Lynn.

The engineer reported that there was still approximately 3500 cubic yards of the original excavation of Laweon Park to be completed, and in view of the experience last winter it was necessary to increase the baiter, which would require the excavation of a further 2500 cubic yards. It would also be neccseary to construct a 2ft by 2ft rubble drain to take seepage from the batter. Without the extra work on the batter it would take approximately three months and a half for 20 men to complete the job. The council decided that the Mayor approach the Minister of Labour to make arrangements for the majority of the men to remain on street works and a small number to effect partial completion of the Park.

The worke committee reported that a thorough inspection oi the street lighting hnd been made, and recommended that a. further 10 light* be installed and 10 alteration* and three increases made with the extra discount made available by the WaJtemata Klectric Power Board, at a cost nf £84 IC.

The town clerk reported that rwoipts for the seven months totalled £28,257. as agninst £15.70.1 for the same date last year, tlie principal increase being £11.682 in refunds of wage* paid. Current rates were £225. and arrears £275 in excess of the figure lat-t year. Waterworks revenue was £431 in excess of the amount at October 31 last year, the principal item being incroaisod payments for water by meter of £389.

On examining the recripte in view of the results over the past seven months it was pafe to estimate an increase of £500 in the estimated revenue to the end of the year. A comparison of the purchase* with the. estimates shows that extra allocation of £165 would bo required for plant operations, and £240 for general works operations. This did not include any further tarrinpc of streets. If £430 wae included for the tarrins* of street* and footpaths the estimated indebtedne*« at March 31, 1939. would be £10.316, as against £11,042 on March 31, 1938, an improvement of £726.

The bank overdraft at March 23 was £6.472, aR against £92»7 at the same date- last year, an improvement of £2825.

The coum-il approved of the town clerk's recommendation that an endeavour be made to secure money at call, interest not to exceed 2 per cent.
