OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough. Council took place last evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., presiding.

Dangerous Road.—The danger to school children using Albion Road on account of one property owner refusing to remove a hedge which would complete the council's plan to widen the whole length of the road was stressed by members of the council. It was resolved to make another and final offer to the owner.

Heavy Traffic Fees. —The Mayor, who acted as the council'e delegate to a continence called for the purpose of discussing distribution of heavy traffic fees, said the matter was left to the Minister of Transport to assess each local body. The council expressed approval of the method adopted.

Orphans' Fund. —The council donated £ 1 1/ towards the expenses of the annual outing for orphans.

Air Attack Precautions.—Dealing with a letter from the Minister of Internal Affaire in regard to possible air attacks, the council decided to co-operate by forming a local committee, Mr. G. V. Lawes to act as convener.

Swimming and Life-saving. — The National Committee of Swimming and Life-saving requested support for an o.\tensive campaign. The urgency of this was realised by the council, towards which donations had been previously given, and for further support the matter was referred to the legal and finance committee.

Dog Registration.—That the efforts of the Department of Internal Affaire to combat hydatids amongst doge were considered deeirabie was the opinion expi eased by members of the council. This means that for each registration collar issued an extra 1/ will be charged to procure medicine to cure the disease.

Traffic Control.—Mr. A. Murdoch, chairman of the transport committee, brought down a report dealing with traffic control, which involves the holding of a "safety week," aleo to solicit the assistance of the clergy to speak on the humanitarian aspects and the picture theatres to ehow filine regarding "safety first." The council will aleo co-operate with local tarrying firms.

Dressing Sheds.—The borough engineer was instructed to proceed with the excavation necessary for the building of a dressing ehed in Sturges Park, which will be 80 feet in width and 30 feet in depth.

Rate Collection.—The borough treaeurrr reported that up to the discount date the sum of £0192 6/4 or 32.6 per cent of the current year's rates hnd bren collected. At the «ame date last year 30 per cent had been collected.

Fire Plus Indicators.—As a means of making more effective the position of fire plugs, the borough engineer had on view a sample of concrete indicator*, which would be inserted on the curbside and be plainly seen.

Bicycle Licenses.—ln reply to the advisability of licencing cycles, the Town C'lork stated that a by-law was already in effect making the licensing compulsory. The number *o far registered is 1500 and the revenue £7.5. The advantage of this is that the registration number can be easily traced from the borough office, a practice which is frequently adopted by ownere of lost cycles.

Street Names.—As many of the street name signs are unreadable, the works committee wae instructed to remedy this matter.

Concrete Paving.—ln an endeavour to secure a uniform system of concrete pavine in the main etreet it wae decided to solicit the assistance of business firms.

Tamaki Estate.—Mr. F. Grey drew attention to the bad condition in winter of two streets on the Tamaki Estate and urged metalling. The council was favourable, hut other works in hand must be completed first, and the matter was loft in hands of the work* committee for a report.
