New Zealand tennis champion, who now lives in Christehurcli. went to the top of the Canterbury tennis ladder vesterday. He beat C. Aligns. 1020 and lOrtl IViniinion title-holder, in a ranking match at Wilding Park. The score was 2 —C, tj—o. t>—4. AUCKLAND AND PROVINCE. Safimlay morning's rain cause<l a postponement 'of Caro Cup and other grass court matches arra-n-ged by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. The hardcourt programme was proceeded with, some of tile results being: — First tirade.—West End beat Papatoetoe by eight rubbers to one (one unfinished). Second (Jraile.— Mount Eden beat Unity by nine rubbers to one. Third tirade. — Hallyburton Johnstone beat Birkilale by eight rubbers to two. Other (smtests : Papakura heat Mann rewa by nine rubbers fo four in the A grade of the outer-suburban competition. Presbyterians beat Methodists by eight rubbers to four in the annual match between the Papakura churches. In the B grade the Presbyterians were also victorious by ten rubbers to two. Playing in the Ixiwer Waikato competitions at Taupiri the home team defeated Gordonton by 14 sets (122 games) to 2 sets (72 games). At Pukemiro. in the same competition. Ralmi. ten sets (104 game's) beat Pukemiro, six sets (03 games). NEW SOUTH WALES TITLES. SYDNEY, November 27. The oy>enlng round of the New South Wales tennis championship was begun yesterday. The Davis Cup players shaped splendidly. J. E. Rromwicli defeated E. Halliday and A. K. Quist beat F. Bartlett. Otlie.r matches resulted : H. Hopman beat R. Barnes. J. Crawford bent A. Chapman in straight sets. McGrath had a walkover.
