FATAL WOUNDS.
GIRL BATHER VICTIM. ATTACKED BY STINGRAY. HAURAKI GULF TRAGEDY. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. While bathing in shallow water not far from the shore in one of the bays of the Hauraki (lulf, about 12 miles from Thames, yesterday afternoon. Miss Jessie Merle l.aing. aged IS. daughter of Mr. A. E. 1-aing. of Waitakaiuru. was attacked by a stingray and suffered two deep wounds which proved fatal. The girl was bathing with a young mail friend who left the water before her. Later attracted by her screams, he rushed to her assistance and found that she had been badly wounded. Men from a Public Works camp some distance away, rushed the girl to the Thames Hospital, but she died on reaching the institution. One wound was on the thigh and the other on the chest. An inquest was opened last evening, but. after identification had been proved, was adjourned. Miss Laing was a well-known representative hockey player, in Thames.
