INDUSTRIAL LAW.
OVERHAUL NEEDED. discipline in unions. r STATEMENT BY MINISTER. g While explaining that there was no suggestion of altering the principle of the legislation, there was yet need of "" " ver haul of industrial law, said the » Minister of Labour, the Hon H T i Armstrong. 1n an interview this b morning. He said that obsolete and anomalous provisions would be reviewed in a proposal to consolidate the I. C. and A. Act. He hoped to bring down > the necessary legislation during the approaching *e*ftion. There was no suggestion of departing f from the principle of arbitrating, he s explained. Rather it was desired to have t the principle more generally applied. * here were a nninlier of anomalies which -« worked against both worker and * employer. i Amendments to the Act might be necessary to give trade unions the power i deal effectively with any unrulv , elements that were inclined to break away at the slightest provocation, particularly when there were constitutional means of settling differences which ■ might arise. I Another aspect of the law mentioned was that dealing with apprenticeship. The Minister said that the shortage of , skilled workmen and the fact that few ' apprentices had been trained over a * period of five or six years had made f difficulties. He preferred the training of I skilled workers in Xcw Zealand to their ) importation from overseas, and a* a resirtt existing legislation was lieing t thoroughly examined with a view to r improvement. 4 Mr. Armstrong added that when the » proposals were formulated they would doubtless be discussed with the representatives of workers and employers. | ■ i
