GREAT FINISH.

FIRST FAVOURITE. VICTORY BY HEAD. OUTSIDER'S STRONG BID. KNIGHT OF AUSTRALIA NEXT. The Alison Cup produced a great finish, only heads separating the placed horses. Valamito, the winner, was always nicely placed and he came through in the last bit to gain the decision. Knight of Australia came from a good way back in the straight to get second position, just heading off Birthday Boy who looked the winner 100 yards from home. Royal Dapce was prominent for over half the distance, but then faded out.

Royal Dance was the first to show u]> from Dark Shadow, Birthday Boy, Gay Hebel, Black Musk, Valamito, Shy and Phileourt. Along the back Royal Dance was still showing the way to Dark Shadow and Birthday Boy, who were followed by Valamito, Aussie Ra. Fidelis, Shy, Knight of Australia and Phileourt. Valamito had run up third to Dark Shadow and Birthday Boy, while crossing the top. the trio were attended by ■Tomithan who had moved up fast. Black Musk and Knight of Australia, who was also moving up. • Royal Dance and Birthday Boy were first into line from Dark Shadow, Valamito and Jonathan. Half way down. Birthday Boy took charge and looked to be winning, when he was challenged by Valamito and Knight of Australia. Ihe derision going to Valamito by a head from Knight of Australia, with Birthday Boy a similar distance away third. Black Musk was fourth and then came Master Brierly, Phileourt. Royal Dance, Jonathan, Shy and Fidelis. Scratching Pen Bnsy. As the result of scratchings it was not necessary to divide the Melrose Maiden Handicap. Kenneth Robert, after his good showing at Whangarei. was made favourite for the Melrose Maiden, and half way through the race, was in a handy position, going on to get the verdict narrowly from Odtaa. The latter was in charge after a furlong had been covered and it was only in the last part he was headed. Lexden showed a good deal of pace, being one of the first out and was never further away than third. Lexden, Hackensclimidt and Odtaa were the first to show up. the last-named quickly running to the fr?nt and leading across the top from Lexden. Hackenschmidt, Kenneth Robert, Kniglitsbridge and Pleuron. Odtaa was followed into the straight by Kenneth Robert. Lexden. Hackenschmidt, Rajanva, and in a good finish Kenneth Robert got the decision from Odtaa by half a head, with Lexden a length away third. Then came Pasture, Hackenschmidt, Bronwen, Rajanva, Kniglitsbridge and Imperial Eagle. Tepoto's Easy Win. Tepoto made no race of the Milford Handicap, for she soon hit the front and won with the greatest of ease. Penzance was always handy to her but could make no impression in the straight. Royal Vaals was prominent for a while, but the weight told against her over the concluding stages. Simla was first to show out from Leo Colossus. Xgakaru. Royal Vaals and Tepoto, the last-named taking charge before the half mile post was reached from Torch. Penzance, Simla, Xgakaru. Royal Vaals and Leo Colossus. Tepoto was followed into the straight by Penzance. Xgakaru. Silver Ragle. Torch and Royal Abb. Tepoto went on to score by three lengths from Penzance, who beat Torch by five lengths. Royal Abb was fourth, with Royal Vaals, Prival. Simla and Bonstar next. En Tour's Best Effort. En Tour owed his success in the Tiri Hurdles to his staying ability. He has raced consistently this season, winning over steeplechases and also over the battens.- Kilberis was always in the picture and was one of the leaders throughout. This is his best effort this season and he should not be long in winning a stake. Erination, with his big imp"ost of 13.8. again ran a gallant race to get third. Mia Acrea, the favourite, was prominent till six furlongs from, home where he lost his place and was never afterwards dangerous. Kilberis and Mia Acrea were the first to show out from Strathire and Baldric. Gadger falling at the first. Strathire came to grief at the second fence and Electric Flash lost her rider. Kilberis and Mia Acrea piloted the field through the straight from En Tour, Makoi. Chikara and Bsildic. Th'-ve \v;is net ni'vh altera-ti-.n : '

En Totir ran up second to Kilberis, with Erination next. En Tour was first round the home turn, slightly ahead of Kilberis. the pair being followed by Erination, Chikara and Mia Acrea. Once over the last obstacle En Tour drew away to win by two lengths from Kilberis, who beat Erination by three lengths. Chikara was fourth, and then came Mia Acrea and Baldric. Wins Nicely. The two-vear-old event, the Cambria Handicap, resolved itself into a race over the last furlong between High Caste, a half-brother to Stretto. and Orelio, a full-brother to Honour. Orelio was soon in the lead, and stayed there for a half a mile, when High Caste ran up to him and had no difficulty in winning nicely. Beau Repaire showed encouraging form, and he should not be long in getting on the winning list. Orelio was first to show up from Huntiug Cape and Beau Repaire. When they settled down Orelio was followed by Thurnavaals, High Caste, Brazen Bold. Beau Repaire and (Jlen Connell. Orelio was just in front of High Caste when they straightened up for home, with Thurnavaals.. Glen Connell and Beau Repaire following. High Caste ran up to Orelio halfway down the straight and went on to win by half a length, Orelio beating Beau Repaire for second place by two lengths. Glen Connell was fourth, and then came Thurnavaals, Innovation, Gladvnev and Rebel Star. Hunting Cape was slow away. Detailed results MELROSE MAIDEN HANDICAP of £350.
