PONSONBY DEFEATED.
PHELAN SHIELD FINAL.
On Saturday Manukau reached the Phelan Shield final by defeating Ponsonby by a wide, margin, the result of a big scoring run in the first half of the game, when their combination proved too much for Ponsonby.
Manukau were without some of their leading players. R. Chase, their centre, who went to Australia with the New Zealand team, is out of Auckland, and Hemi. the ..Mamrkau. full-back, was ill. Maflukatt brought Bt-odrick in as centre, aad the big forward placed well in a new position. He runs very strongly in attack, but his habit of leaping over tacklefs. although spectacular, is dangerous, and cannot be encouraged.
Ponsonby also played a forward at centre, Petersen coming out of the scrum for the occasion, the backs being rearranged in consequence of the absence of Riley.
Papakura, wit© will have the honour of contesting the final of the Phelan Shield with Manukau, are playing their fimt season of senior League, and in the early part of the olub competition adversity was generally their share. The suburban players, _ however, have shown splendid form in recent matches, and have reached their present position strictly on merit.
