BRADMAN FOR N.Z.? .
AUSTRALIANS COMING.
TOUR IN CjENTENARY YEAR.
FIRST VISIT SINCE 1928.
SYDNEY, September 21,
The Board of Control has decided that an Australian cricket team will visit XenZealand in 1940. The conditions attaching to the visit are to be submitted to the New Zealand Cricket Association before being disclosed here. Dr. Alan Robertson wag re-elected chairman of the board. Private advices are to the effect that D. G. Bradman is almost certain to be captain of the team, and to play hk first Kame in this country. He was scheduled to appear in an exhibition match at Wellington several years ago, when A. A. Mailey's Australian team was returning from America, but owing to lack of coordination by the authorities he went for a motor trip in the southern part of the province. The last occasion an official Australian XI. took the field in the Dominion was in 1928, when Y'ictcr Richardson's strong side included men like W. M. Woodful!, W. H. Ponsford, A. F. Kippax, A. A. Jackson. K. J. Schneider, R. K. Oxenhani, 13. 1). J. Blackie, and that great matchwinning combination, W. A. S. Oldfield an«l C. V. Grimmett. Jackson and Schneider have since crossed the Divide. Arrangements had been made for another side to cross the Tasman in 1934-35, but Australia had sent all its cracks to South Africa soon after their return from England. Bradman was not available owing to his appendicitis operation in the Old Country, and the \ T e«Zealand Cricket Association refused to accept the team as finally chosen, and cancelled the tour.
The 1937 Dominion XI. played three games in the Commonwealth on its way back from the United Kingdom, and performed creditably.
