annual meeting held

The Eden district local Oirl Guide Assoc.ation held its annual meeting in the Methodist Hall. Dominion Koad. last night. There was a pood attendance of parents gliders and guides. Kenorts of the different puide and brownie companies and packs in the district were read, and each report showed an increase in keenness and activity.

The district report was presented bv llie district commissioner, Mrs. Ambler There wa* a great difficulty, she said, in procuring the right people to train as guider*. She continued to sav that the association wished to place on record the valuable service to gliding in the many years" work done by Miss Marks and Mi.** Kvaru*.

An inspiring talk was given bv Mr* Kennedy on the subject of "Adventure." She advised the girls to be unafraid, to face life cheerfully, to look for something to do for somebody, and to live creatively, adventurously, deeply and ahundantlv.

MORNING TEA HELD

An appropriate address was given to the members of the Auckland Travel Club at a morning tea held in the Milne and Choyce Tudor Tearooms to-day, when Mr. E. M. Blaikloclc spoke on "Travellers in the Ancient World." The honorary director of the club. Mrs. Victor Macky, presided at the meeting. Committee members present at the function included:—Lady Wilson, Mrs. Charles Matryn. Mrs. (I. T. Simpson. Mrs. H. T. Merritt, Mrs. R. Sheath, Mrs. F. H. (lifford. Mrs. (i. E. Anderson. Mrs. Archibald Bishop and Mrs. Mackenzie Wilson.

Anions the guests of honour were: — Mrs. E. M. Blaiklock, Mrs. Alpin (Wellington), Mrs. Wilson (Lower Hutt). Miss Peggy Wilson (Sydney). Miss Xgaire Alpin (Wellington). Mrs. Proctor (Wellington), Miss Kitty Edwards (London). Mrs. F. L. France (Chicago), Mrs. 'Lloyd (New South Wales), Miss Shanks (Christchurch), Mrs. F. A. Knight (Wellington Travel Club), Miss Lloyd (Xow South Wales), Mrs. P. Brown (Invercaigill). Miss Isobel Brown (Invereargill), Mr. de Cavalho (Nevada), and six students from the Auckland Training College.

EIGHTY YEARS OF AGE

At the Parnell Park Tea Kiosk Mr. Cameron Buchanan, of Devonport, oelebrated his eightieth birthday this week. Mr and Mrs. Sidnel Hartmann (host and hostess) received the many relations and old friends.

The tables were tastefully decorated in pink. During the evening a large birthday cake bearing SO candles was cut. -Mr. Buchanan was the recipient of many telegram*, cables and gifts.» including a beautiful electric clock from the Master Bakers' Association. During the evening Mr. and Mrs. Alf Pascoe. Mr. Gol*«bn Fagan and Mr. P. Freeman rendered musical items.

Mr. Buchanan spoke of his earlv life on the Great Mercury Island. hi.s father being a pioneer settler there. Mr. Buchanan recalled exciting incident? that happened there.
