THE SYDNEY CONFERENCE.
"W. Anderson," whom I am now astonished to discover is a professor, wrote to you to ' denounce the opinion expressed at the Sydney conference by the Xew Zealand delegates, that the Dominion's traditional attitude to the United Kingdom is changing. This opinion will - to most people- appear unexceptionable, and, even, if exceptionable, not of momentous importance, but Professor Anderson seems to'' regard it as a tell-tale sign of a plot against the British Empire. His "evidence" is- that some' of the Xew Zealand delegates are Xew Zealand University graduates and therefore (in his eyes) suspect on the ground'of being "receptive to Communist ideas." (He has withdrawn his original implied statement that all products of the Xew Zealand education system are "adherents of the Communist International"!) I wrote to protest against r this reckless and unfair attack upon respon- . . men durintr their absence from Xew [Zealand. lam sorry to find that, despite his position. Professor Anderson does not express regret for his attack, but he launches another / one, no less' unwarranted and foolish, on Victoria College. I will say nothing in reply Ito this except that his assertions are untrue. .But I would like Professor Anderson to explain, if all is rotten in the education system of Xew Zealand, and particularlv in the University Colleges (and the only *con- . elusion to be drawn from his letters is that ithat is his conviction) why he does nothing about it, and why, as a gentleman of intellectual integrity (all professors. are=, aren't '<' theyT), he remains a part of the system.
EX-VICTORIA.
