Reference to a letter which appeared in the "Auckland Star" on Septeinber H in connection with the election to the council of the Auckland University Collejre of Mr. S. Leathern, representing members of Parliament in the A tick hind province, was made at yesterday's meeting of the council. The writer asked for the reason of Mr. Leathem's appointment, a» he held the post of assistant lecturer in the department of ec >n i.s. Cocker, "but I feel that now. in fairness to Mr. Leathern, we should mn ke some utateinent. It should be explained that Mr. Leathern had actually resigned bin lectureship immediately O n appointment to the council."
When the resignation wns referred to the professor in charge of the school of commerce, said Mr. Cocker, he had asked that Mr. Lent hem lie allowed to continue in hi* present position until the end of the third term. "The council endorsed this «ii""CMtioii solely in the interests of the students, because at the time the profensor'H report wan made there were only live weekH of lectures to be completed." * a id Mr. Cocker. He explained that Mr. Leathern wan a part-time lecturer, l>eiiig engaged for only two hour* a woek.
