MENTONE CUP.
SUCCESS or PAGEANT. KERRY BOY'S COURSE RECORD. MELBOURNE, September 18. Several Xew Zealand horses were seen out at the Mentone meeting yesterday, when the principal event, the Mentone Cup, wag won narrowly by Pageant from the Xew Zealand-bred gelding Footmark. Netherlea and Raeburn were unplaced in the Yarramin Handicap, Queen of Song, Silver Bond and Edible in the first division of the Dandenong Welter Handicap, and Whernside and Pharaoh in the second division. Elanage and Top Row were unplaced in the Leslie Stuart Stakes, won by Judean from Lilirene. Only One finished third in the Boisdale Handicap. Kerry Bay, winner of the Hurdles, established a course record of 3.39*4 for two miles and 20 yards. Results:— MENTONE CUP of £400. One mile and a quarter. PAGEANT, br c, 4yrs, by WindbagGay Element (Mr. H. E. Spry), 7.12—A. Reed 1 FOOTMARK (New Zealand-bred), b h, 4yrs. by Defoe—Bachelor's Picture (Messrs. S. J. and N. V. Mills), 8.7 —W. Morley 2 PLYMOUTH HOE, br c. 4yrs, by Drake —-Tampa (Mr. V. Newhouse), 7.6— H. Badger 3 Eight started, including International. In a keen finish, Pageant obtained the verdict by a neck from Footmark, who played up at the' barrier and during the race tried to run off the course. Plymouth Hoe was a head away third. Time, 2.6%.
