OBITUARY.

MR. WILLIAM BASS.

The death has occurred at his home, 1, Epsom Avenue, of Mr. William Bass, at the «ge of 89 years. He had spent t>4 of those years fa Xew Zealand, and was an ex-railwayman, well known in Canterbury and Taranaki. He was stationnmster at Xew Plymouth, Ashburton (Canterbury) and 'Petone (Wellington).

-Mr. Basis, who was born in County Wexford, Ireland, was formerly m the Dublin Constabulary. He was a passenger to Xew Zealand in the 'seventies of la*t century in the tailing ship Edwin Pox. which went ashore on the coast of France. With the other passengers, he spent several weeks in France while the ship was repaired. The Edwin Fox was a well-known East Indiaman, and is now a hulk at Pit-ton.

Mr. Fox settled in Canterbury and joined the railway service at Lyttelton as a cadet in 1873. He was a railway servant in several parts of Xew Zealand, but spent most of his time in Taranaki and Canterbury. He was relieving stationmastcr at Petone when he retired, 28 years ago. He has since resided in Auckland, and wax one of the oldest superannuated railway servants in Xew Zealand. He leaves one son and two daughters. MR. C. C. SMITH. (By Telegraph.— Association.)
