CAR CONVERSION.
INCREASED PENALTY.
S.I.M.U. STRESSES NEED.
PETROL TAX REMISSION.
(Br Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) C'HRISTCHURCH, this day.
"Judging by the frequency with which the offence occurs, it seems as if magistrates are not using their power to inflict heavy penalties." states the annual report of the South Island Motor Union, making reference to the number of cases of wrongful conversion of motor cars in the Dominion.
To see that more adequate punishment is imposed, the report continues, it is proposed to ask associations to .-tart an agitation through the newspapers to bring the question more effectively before the public. The reporj adds that some time ago representations by the motor unions were largely responsible for securing increased penalties for car conversion.
Referring to motor taxation, the report says that it was considered that further representations for reduced taxation should be towards obtaining a
remission of petrol tax. and especially the emergency tax of 4id a gallon imposed in the depression, and now used as general revenue.
Failing the removal of this tax, the animal conference will be nsked to make repro-entations to have the whole of this taxation devoted to the roads, thus relieving the Highways Board of the necessity for borrowing.
The report adds that it was considered that the regulations dealing with the Adjustment of headlights were unsatisfactory. A report from the union on what were thought desirable regulations li'.ul been sent to the Commissioner of Transport.
