SHOPPING HOURS.
In a recent publication of the "Auckland Star" I noticed an advertisement by one firm of grocers that they were keeping their ehops open until 5.30 on four nights in the week. I "would like to see the same and other firms adopt these hours in the country districts •when the five o'clock closing prevails. In the town where I reside the grocers close at 5 p.m. and drapers and others at 5.30. One grocer whom I know states that he has lost a considerable amount of business owing to the five o'clock closing. People who finish work at five called at the shop for goods on their way home. Xow all this business has gone to suburban and other shops that employ no labour. A leading tetore' manager toid me ro-Mitlv that five o'clock closing was no good and that a lot of cash business was lost, and there was very little done before ten or half,pa«t in the mornings. If the grocers' assistants do not want to work after five I think they | should allow their employers and the managers ito keep the shopa orpen until 5.30, because it seems to me that it is from the proceeds ef jbusiness that the assistants derive their living.
FAIRNESS.
