W AR ON CANCER.

AUCKLAND'S SHARE.

STATISTICAL RESEARCH. PROGRESS OF THE CAMPAIGN. (Tly Ti'lPtrrnpli.- Own Correspondent.) DUXKDIN, this day. At the annual meeting of the OtagoSouthland division of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, Sir LouU Barnett «ai<l that a remit from the general committee of the division which received fairly •rcneral a|rprovnl was that Auckland .-houhl be the centre or clearing house for cancer statistical research. Auckland hud the largest hospital and Ihe busiest clinic in the Dominion, he mi id. and this plan would give it an appropriate share of the Dominion work organised by. tTiC cancer campaign, and pei hajki. would encourage citizens of that ]«.ipulous district, to provide an appropriate share of the financial burden involved. It va« somewhat remarkable that. the financial position of the divisions, which at present was deplorably weak at Auckland, became progressively stronger one went southward. Their own division, with the smallest population, was definitelv the best off.

The Mayor. Mr. A. 11. Allen, referring to the transfer of certain aspects of the work to Auckland, as nielli hilled by Sir Louis lianiett. said the Ota go Medical School had such a high reputation that it. seemed to him. as a layman, a pity that, the work could not lie done in this centre. He was looking at the thing, of course, from a business man's point of view, and not from that of the medical profession, but he felt that, considering the place taken by Dunedin in medical training and research, it would be a great thing if some notable contribution to the attack on this deadly disease could h«> mado in Dunedin. It would accomplish a great deal for the profession and medical research in this part of the Dominion

Dr. D'Atli explained that the plan to transfer certain activities to Auckland aimed at giving the northern ccntrc some work of its own to do in order to stimulate and quicken interest and enthusiasm. Dunedin had shouldered the greater part of the burden of lal>oratory work; Christchurch was responsible for the radio-physical side of the work, and Wellington was responsible for the financial direction of the campaign. Auckland now had its own particular job, which was the examination and correlation of tfcc vast amount of statistk-H and d«ta that had been accumulated with respe*4 to the 7000 patients under investigation in the Dominion.
