CANTERBURY CLUB TRIBUTES.

Eloquent tributes to the memory of the late Archbishop Julius were paid at a largely-attended meeting of the Canterbury Club held last evening.

Canon R. G. Coats, in moving a resolution of regret and sympathy, referred to the loss of "that grand old man of Canterbury; one of New Zealand's greatest men in the personal influence he exerted."

The speaker recalled the fact that it was Archbishop Julius who had induced him as a lad of 19 to join his son-in-law in the mission field and who in subsequent years had given him the benefit of his wise and kindly guidance. Archbishop Julius, continued the speaker, was above creeds, entering fully the life of the community with a wealth of human understanding, an abounding friendliness and bubbling humour. His counsel was always on the side of goodness and righteousness and despite his tolerance he was unwavering when it became necessary to make a determined stand.

The chairman of the meeting, Rev. G. V. Gerard, Bishop-elect of Waiapu, and the Rev. A. B. Chappell also paid personal tributes.

The president, Mr. Harry Frost, said the club s representative in Christcbnrch Mr. Dan Reese, had been asked to convey a wreath and to represent members at the memorial service In the Chrtetchurch Cathedral.
