VETERANS' GOLF TITLE RETAINED.
DOWNER'S SUCCESS.
SOUND SECOND ROUND. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") ROTORUA, this day. A. W. Downer (Rotorua), the titleholder, retained the Veterans' Cup by defeating A. J. Shepherd (Morriusville), G and 5, yesterday afternoon. The pair were all square after the first round in the morning, but Downer outplayed his opponent in tlie next 18 holes. Downer gave a confident display when in tlie afternoon tlie match was resumed hi warm sunshine. After he had won the K'th in bogey figures the 20th was halved in loins, but Downer then played par golf to be six up at tlie 25th. Shepherd saved tlie next with his stroke allowance and at tlie 27th did an excellent three, Downer being four up. In the afternoon round Downer went out in 38, which was one better than his score for the same nine holes in the morning. Downer took the next hole with a birdie four against Shepherd's six, but at The Sentinels both played bad golf and it was won by Shepherd, who made use of his allowance, both being down in fives. The 30th was won by Downer with a five after both had been in trouble, and in the next Plieptierd threw away any chance of reducing his heavy deficit by playing both his tee shot ami second into the rough. Downer was down in four, taking the match 6 and 5. In the Arikikupakapa Cup final W. W. Maingay (Morriusville), a previous holder of the Veterans'.Cup, was too steady for J. Barraclough .(Hastings), the contest ending on the 23th green in a victory for Maingay. The pair met on almost even terms. Barraclough conceding his opponent one stroke each round.
