BASKETBALL TOURNEY. QUEENSLAND DEFEATED. DOMINION DEFENCE HOLDS. MELBOURNE, August 15. At the basketball tournament to-day New Zealand beat Queensland, 13—9. T.'he Xew Zealandere' good positional playattracted attention, .as did their mire handling and swift passing. The Australian loot work rules proved a great handicap and the players were continually penalised. The score at half-time* was: New Zealand 6, Queensland 5. In the eecond spell New Zealand improved, with good defence and interceptione. Mi Matangi and J. Mitchell kept Queensland's score down. Windy conditions made accurate shooting difficult. The New Zealand team comprised M. Matangi, J. Mitchell, E. Sinclair, M. Martin, J. Wilson, E. Neame and J. Tyrell. Victoria beat New South Wales. 38--S, and South Australia beat Tasmania, 34—12.
An exhibition game under New Zealand rule* will be played to-morrow.
