NIGHT TROTTING.
*OVE DC VICTORIA. i
POLITICAL ACTION SOUGHT. After much talk in Victoria anent the desirability of holding trctting race meetings at night, there is at last a definite move in that State to achieve the end desired. A deputation of breeders, owners and trainers was to wait on the chief secretary this week to urge the Government to introduce a bill to provide for night trotting. Melbourne was introduced to night trotting when races were run under electric light at the showgrounds during Show Week last September. Lawn Derby, the crack New South Wales pacer, was a big attraction. He broke Auburn Lad's record for a Bile, registering 2.4 3-5, while Tasmania's crack, Logan Derby, covered the distance in 2.7}. Both went from a flying start, whereas Auburn Lad began from a stand to run 2.8 J.
Some provincial clubs are aiming at a revival of the sport, and with support from the metropolis have regained some of the lost interest.
Night trotting is popular in South Australia, as, apart from bookmakers, nearly £10,000 is wagered on the tote each nighjp _ The races are held each Saturday night and sometimes on holiday nights.
