TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS ENTERTAIN
Excellent Programme At Ball Last Nigh
As well as many college students, guests present at the Teachers' Training College ball given last night by the principal, Mr. D. M. Rae, included a large number of representative Auckland citizens, members of the three services and representatives of other education bodies.
On arrival the gnests were received by Mr. Rae, assisted by Airs. Rae, who was wearing a frock of mauve pebble crepe with a violet velvet coatee; Miss E. B. Lea, the women's warden, who was in a frock of navy tinsel cloque; and Alisw Marie Bomfont, president of the Students' Association, who was wearing sunset pink net over taffeta.
The earlier part of the evening was occupied with an enjoyable programme preeented by the students., the special guests thus having an opportunity of seeing for themselves the talent that is present in the college. The second half of the evening was spent in dancing.
The programme opened with two travel films showing views of Ceylon and Java. This was given from the college's own eound machine. Under the leadership of Mr. Ramsay Howie, selections from "Lilac Time"' (Schubert) and the Anvil Chorue from "II Trovatore" (Verdi) were given by the college orchestra. Soprano solos were given by Miss Rachael Macwhinney. Another outstanding item was the presentation of A. P. Herbert's one-act burlesque, "Two Gentlemen of Soho." This play wae produced by Mr. Norman Pilcher, and those taking part included Miss Marie Pest Miss Joan Livingstone, Miss Mary Grierson, Mr. Lan Menzies, Mr. Frank Crist. Mr. Barney Mills, Mr. Alan Rogers and Mrs. James McCabe. Those responsible for the stage setting were Messrs. Reid and K. Harrod. Mr. Gillies wae responsible for the sound effects, Mr. Peter Robertson for the lighting, and Mr. Peter Munro presided at the piano.
