YOUNG TRAINER.
Ik GEORGE'S TEAM.
SOME PROMISING HORSES.
, Leo George has become firmly established at Hawera, in the convenient and *commodione premises formerly occupied by J. Fryer, opposite the racecourse, and seldom has a young trainer commenced operations of such responsibility under more favourable conditions, for fie has seven horses under hie care at present, eaye our Hawera correspondent
Starting his racing career "ae an lice to hin father, the well-known and successful trainer, E. George, at New Plymouth, when that mentor had such good performers as Te Monanui, Alteration, Hipo, Stork and Lady Quex under hie care, and. under the tuition of Hector Gray-, who was connected with the stable at the, time, Leo commenced a successful riding career, winning many races, among them the. Mitchelson and. Stratford Chips on Stork, the Opunake Cap on Richfield, Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth-on Hipo, and many races, on Lady Quez in the early part of her racing, also eight races on Cereal. With increasing weight, George turned his attention to training, turning out his first winner in Illuminate, who subsequently turned out a good performer over hurdles. Winsome Lu (who won seven races), Racecall (eight) and Dancing Lady are his most recent successes. At present the following comprise his team for the coming season: SilvanUß, by Nigger Minstrel; Gold Band, by Lackham; Kacecall, by an unknown sire; Winsome Lu, by Raceful; Ramleh, by Rabbi; Lady Boden, by Mullaboden; and a rising two-year-old by Acre from All Amber. The lastnamed is one of the last batch sired by Acre and impresses being typical of the progeny of that successful sire. The youngster is making good progress and will be tried out, all going well, at Christmas time. Racecall has been enjoying a let-up, but, being of the wiry type, has not become gross, and is to be put into work straight away. Silvanus, who has also been on the easy list prior to joining the stable, has done well and is doing steady work, but is unlikely to sport silk until the Waverley meeting, unless present intentions are altered. Gold Band and Winsome Lu are in strong work, intentions being to race -them at the end of the month at New Plymouth. The- promising young horse Ramleh has returned from a spell and will be pottered about for the present.
With such promising material George will add interest to the Hawera training centre.
