COUNTY COUNCIL PROPOSED. OPPOSITION BY RESIDENTS. An indication that there is likely to be opposition to any move to place the local affaire of Wailieke Island under the rontrol of a county council wa-s given thie niominjr. when a deputation represeiitin.L' a section of the property owners waited on Mr. F. W. Schramm. M.P., and intimated their intention of lodging a petition ajrainrst any change in the method of control of the island.
The question of control came forward recently when the need for improved roadiuir and other facilities was brought to the notice of the Minister of Internal Affaire. Hon. W. E. Parry. Control is at the present time vested in the Ostend aiwl Orapiu Road Boards, the latter having only a small field of influence, whle it "is stated that there is no authority capable of exercising jurisdiction ov«r the whole island. The Minister suggested that the getting >zp of a-, county council would be in the interests of all concerned.
Arrangements have been'made for a conference on Saturday next at Ostend between the interested parties, including property owners, residents and the two roed boards. Mr. Schramm, as M.P. for the district, will he present, while representativpe of the Department of Tntemal Affairs. Wellington, will atteiwl to explain the legal position to the conference.
