FORMAL MEETING.

FIRST BrOTICES SENT OUT.

Rates for the ensuing year. consisting: of a general rate of l/!>i in the £. a library rate of Id in the £, a hospital and charitable aid rate of 8d in the £. and a drainajre rate of 3]d in the £, were struck at a special meeting of the Auckland City Council at noon to-day, the total amount, with provision of 1/SJ in the £ for interest, being 4/51. an increase of 21d compared with last year. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, pointed out that it was purely a formal meeting in accordance with statutory requirements.

The rates were then dulv struck, and Messrs.. J. A. C. Alluiu and E. F. Andrews were appointed to sign the rate books.

The water rates for the Tear commencing June 1. and ending May 31 next, were also fixed, the amount for lands and dwelling houses being 1(1/ where the annual rateable value does not exceed £12 10/, and 4Jd per cent of the value where the annual rateable value exceeds £12 10/. Upon all buildings used other than as dwelling houses the rate fixed is 5/, where the annual rateable value does not exceed £12 10/, and 2Jd where the annual rateable value exceeds £12 10/.

The first of the rate notices were sent out this afternoon bv the city treasurer, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby. and during the next few weeks over 30,000 rate notices will be sent out in the city area.

City ratepayers will have a period of six months, plus an additional period of two weeks, in which to pay, and then a penalty of 10 per cent will be imposed on unpaid rates.
