WAR AVERTED.
South American Republics Agree to Arbitrate. GRAN CHACO DISPUTE. BUENOS AYRES, July 10. Delegates from Paraguay and Bolivia yesterday initialled an agreement to arbitrate on the Gran Chaco dispute, thus removing a very grave threat to peace on the American continent. Statesmen in numerous American Republics, and in the United States, have been working for three years to achieve a peaceable settlement and prevent renewal of a sanguinary war. A cablegram from Buenos Ayres on June 29 stated that a new war over the territory threatened to break out between Bolivia and Paraguay. Both countries were spending large sums on arms, in expectation of hostilities. In 1925 war broke out between these two republics, and lasted until 1935, when a truce was effected by the United States and neighbouring republics intervening.
