DIED AT SEA.
MAYOR OF HONOLULU.
MESSAGE FROM MARIPOSA. A wireless message from the Matson liner Mariposa announces the death at sea of Mr. George F. Wright, Mayor of Honolulu. The information states that death occurred yesterday while the Mariposa was steaming northward between Pago Pago and Honolulu, where she is due to arrive on Wednesday. Mr. Wright had been on a healthrecruiting trip and reached Auckland on the Mariposa on Juno 10. He had intended to make the round trip to Melbourne. He was ill on arrival at Auckland, and Sir Ernest Davis, Mayor of Auckland, persuaded him to come ashore. Mr. Wright had apparently made sufficient progress by Monday last to be taken on boa,rd the Mariposa for his homeward trip. Two nurses accompanied him, and according to advice received from the vessel last Thursday he appeared to be standing the voyage well.
Mr. Wright was 55 years of age and had bsen Mayor of Honolulu for the past eight years. Over 50 years ago he visited Ne\v Zealand with his father, who was emigrating from England. They intended to settle in the United States, but changed their plans on reaching Honolulu and remained there. »
Mr. Wright's main interest in Auckland was to see his relatives, of whom four are resident in the city. They are Mr. P. RopeT and Mr. R. Roper, of Truro Road, Sandringham, Mr. Gordon Roper, of St. Mary's Road, Ponsonby, and Mr. Stan. Roper, of Grey Lynn. Two other first cousins, Mr. B. Roper and Mr. Frank Roper, reside in New Plymouth and Whangarei respectively. Mr. Wright's mother and the late Mrs. M. Roper, of Ponsonby, were sisters.
