LEAGUE FOOTBALL
BY ONE POINT.
TOOWOOMBA BEATEN. K.Z. LEAGUE TOUR. HEMI TURNS THE SCALE. TOOWOOMBA, June 22. The New Zealand League football team narrowly won by 12 points to 11 against Toowoomba to-day, after a game in which the losers dominated almost the entire second half. Only Hemi's kicking provided the winning margin, ae Toowoomba scored three tries against two.
The Kiwis' tackling was weak, as, with the exception of MeNeight and Herring, they were too prone to go tor the head instead of low.
After consultation with the Toowoomba captain, the referee decided on a more liberal interpretation of the play-the-ball rule, but rarely did either eide observe the three-yard limit.
Anderson was the outstanding forward on the ground, -his clever backing up resulting in two tries. Kay's ehoulder gave him no trouble, but he spared himself in tackling. He made several brilliant openings and combined well with Chase. Orman was beaten for the ball in the first half, but got it in the vita! concluding stages.
Anderson's first try came from an opening made by Kay. who picked up the ball in the ruck and ran 20yds, leaving Anderson an open field. The eecond was from .a scramble on the goal-line after Brimble liad received from the scrum and cut out the opposing five-eighthe and centre and ran 40yds down the centre of the field. That was one of the few occasions upon which Brimble did anything elee but short-punt the ball. The Xew Zealanders defended gallantly agaii st desperate attacks, in which play was solely confined to their territory in the closing quarter of an hour. Gault and McNeil were omitted from the New Zealand team.
