SOCIALISM OPPOSED.
COLONEL HARGEST'S VIEWS
CRITIC OF HOUSING SCHEME
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, Friday. A large gathering was present at the King's Theatre, Oliakune, last evening when Colonel J. Hargest, M.P. for Awarua, Southland, gave a political address in the interests of the National party. The deputy-Mayor, Dr. Jordan, presided.
The National party, stated Colonel Hargest in his address, had left the finances of the country in a buoyant state, and he doubted if any other Government in the British Empire was able to do the «ame. The objective of the Labour party wa.s the socialisation of distribution and exchange. State ownership of property and State employment of all labour. But the National party was going to resume control at the "lid of the year, and would wipe out Socialism. There was no difference ■ ictween Socialism in New Zealand and Russia. By Socialism no persons could own his. or her own home.
The speaker quoted the Minister of Lands as having said that no man was entitled to own land, lieoause private ownership would be only used to plunder and gamble with. As a further instance lie mentioned the object of Socialism in not giving tenants a chance of owning tiie houses being built by the State, but preferred to charge exorbitant rents, varying up to"31/ a week.
