FIRE TRAGEDY.
CHILDREN TRAPPED.
VERDICT AT INQUEST.
DEFECTIVE CHIMNEY CAUSE
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, this dav.
A verdict that .Tack Roiaill, aged three years, and Dorothy May Roiall, aged 18 months, died on June 14 at New Street.
Rang," tana, from asphyxiation and burning in the destruction of their home by lire, due to a defective chimney, was returned by the coroner, Mr. W. H. Sanford, at the inquest to-day.
Mrs. Roiall's father, Mr. Barnicle, s«iid that several years ago the fireplace was .-oilverted into an open one, necessitating a number of new bricks. He had >ften noticed that the mantelpiece be•ame hot when there was a fire hurtling.
An investigation made by the coi-mer disclosed that the new bricks had shrunk from the old, leaving a space between. This had accounted for the mantelpiece becoming hot. The woodwork around the chimney had evidently been binning for some considerable time before the flames appeared through the roof, which accounted for the fire gaining such a good hold before being noticed.
