♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ i Cutting Off Large Branches IT is necessary at times to cut 1 away large branches of trees, and by large is meant any branch that requires more than a knife or secateurs to cut it away. Too often in looking around gardens wounds caused iu rutting awav branches are still to he seen years later in the shape of dead stumps or cavities full of decaying wood. # hen cutting off a large branch cut it as close to the main stem as possible giving the cut surface a coat of tar or white paint as soon after cutting as possible. In a few months the wound will callus over. It will be hidden from view and secure from infection. A ' ar £ e limb which, when partly cut will fall and split, causing the lower part to tear away a large sliver from the main stem. To prevent this make a cut underneath the branch first, nearly halfway, then cut through from the top side. This advice applies to all trees whether fruiting or ornamental kinds '
