Firethorn Fruit THE pyracanthas, or firethorns, are beautiful shrubs, especially in the autumn to early spring, when they carry a crop of conspicuous, pretty fruit. P. I!o«:ersiana, from China, forms ail elegant, bushy aliruli, laden in summer with white flowers; as a flowering shrub it is worthy of inclusion in a choice collection; in autumn the orange-red berries provide a feast, of colour. I'. flava is a fine variety. producing an abundance of bright chrome-yellow fruits; sometime* called aurantiaca. it is a most desirable form, contrasting splendidly with the more fiery members of this fine genus. The pyracanthas are ideal for effectively covering walls, and P. T'ogersiana and P. Tt. flava form very good as isolated specimens. Others of the genua of more than ordinary merit nre P. angust ifolia. a narrow leaved Chinese species bearing wliowy clusters of orange-yellow berries; P. flibbsii. also Chinese, with large leaves and orange-red berries; I'. yunnancn*is. a fine form, horizontally branched coralred fruits, and. of course, the well-known P. coccinea and P. C. Lnlaudii. Their fresh evergreen leafage is desirable. Tn flower they are attractive: in fruit they are treasures of the garden.
