BEACH NUISANCE.
WARNING TO FISHERMEN. I CLEANING THE CATCHES. ______ As a warning to enthusiasts who do their fishing in Rangitoto Channel and clean their catches on Cheltenham Beach the Devonport Borough Council to-day prosecuted a young man in th» Magistrate's Court. The defendant admitted depositing offensive matter on the beach. , Counsel for, the borough council explained that a heavy penalty was not asked for, the present proceedings being brought chiefly with the object of warning those who had been in the habit of cleaning fish on the beach that to do so was a breach of the borough by-laws. The defendant remarked that the gulls ate up any portion of fish left after the cleaning. Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., said it was not right that fish should be cleaned and the entrails left on a beach which was popular with bathers. As a heavy penalty wae not asked for, the defendant would be ordered to pay costs £1
