ASTRONOMER'S DEATH.
SUICIDE IN SAN FRANCISCO. (Received 10 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, June 14. Dr. William Campbell, aged 70,-ex-president of the University of California and ex-director of the famous Lick Observatory, jumped from the fourth floor window of his apartment and was killed. He had been despondent, and he left notes for his family. William Wallace Campbell, Sc.D., LI.D., M.S., the American astronomer, was educated at Michigan, Western Cambridge and Columbia Universities. From 1886 to 1888 he was Profeßsor of Mathematics at Colorado University, while, in 1891 he became instructor in astronomy, at Michigan University. Ten years later he became director of that college, and he held both posts until 1930. From 1923 to 1930 he was president of the University of California, and in 1931 was elected president of the National Academy of Sciences.
