LOCAL BODIES.

MOUNT ALBERT BOROUGH. The Mount Albeit Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. li. A. Anderson, presiding. Building Permits. —The town clerk, Mr. T. K. Congalton, reported that for the three weeks ending June D, 11 building permits had been issued, of a value ot £4305. The permits for May numbered 20, valued at £8200. Sports Ground Works. —The engineer, i Mr. vY. K. Begbie, reported that under | .scheme 13, at Fowlds Park, the No. 3 football ground had been finished during the period, and a shelter belt of trees was now being provided on the western and southern sides of the field. A total of 76 I men was now engaged under the fulltime subsidy scheme. Park Lighting.—The Auckland Electric 1 Power Board, it was reported, had now , laid the cables for the lighting in Uribble- | hirst Pavk and was now carrying out similar work in Fowlds Park. Kate Collections. —Up to June 2, the sum of £2804 had been collected in the general and water rates, reported the legal and finance committee. NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Nortlicote Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, presiding. Local Bodies.—The Mayor and Mr. \V. E. Aspden .vere appointed delegates to the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association. Onewa Footpath.—The extension of the kerbing and channelling to the frontage of the Northcote District High School was urged in a letter from the committee, as improvements were to be undertaken in front of the school grounds. The councils reply was to the effect that the construction of this footpath to permanent level would be put in hand at an early date. Crossings.—ln response to representations made by the Primary School Committee, the construction of two pedestrian crossings were authorised with a view to safeguarding the safety of children attending the primary school, one near Church Street and the other across Lake Road, in line with the northern footpath in Onewa Road. Exhibition.—No action was taken in respect to the request that Northcote should contribute £29 towards the provision of a court representative of the Auckland Province at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition to be held at Wellington. Unauthorised Garage.—A temporary garage in Prince's Street, erected without permit, was ordered to be removed forthwith. GLEN EDEN TOWN BOARD. The fortnightly meeting of Hie Glen Eden Town Board was held ill the board offices on Monday evening, the chairman. Captain A. G. Hackett, presiding. Works Committee.—Several recommendations were adopted by the works committee. One was that the l>oard enforce the provisions of Section 209 of the Municipal Corporations Act. This requires occupiers of lands abutting streets to cut down or grub up all obstructions arising from the growth of plants up to the middle line of the street. It was decided to employ four additional men under fche wane subsidy scheme, such iryL-n to be employed on footpath formation work in Woodlands, Prospect, Edenview, Oates, Wilson. Scott, Bowers and Evans Roads. The works committee was instructed to bring down an amended schedule of plants to be declared noxious weeds in the town district. Estimates of expenditure on main highways as submitted to the District Highways Council were approved. It wan decided to draw t'he attention of the Railway Department to the advertising hoarding recently erected on railway property at the Croydon Road crossing, which obstructs the road view of trains arriving from the north, creating additional danger at this crossing. i Finance Committee.—Schedule of rentals : for hire of the Town Hall for local enter- , tai vi in cuts were fixed as follows: Public meetings,-30/ per concerts, 30/ per night; dances till midnight, 40/ per night.

MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD. The Mount Roskill Road Board met last night, the chairman, Mr. C. M. McCullough, presiding. Scheme No. 13. —The works committee reported on the feasibility of employing additional labour tinder scheme 13, and stated that the value of works on which estimates had been prepared by the foreman of works was approximately £8000. Ihe committee had reviewed several possible works to employ extra men, but objections in every instance prevented such works being undertaken. The committee was forced to the conclusion that no further labour of this type could profitably be engaged, and that the foreman s intention to concentrate on quarry output, the scoria pit output, anil l'arau Street levelling with the present staff be approved. The committee further recommended the sealing of Ridge, Hayr and St. Andrew Roads, and Denbeigh Avenue, at a total cost of £1874. Labourers' Union. —The same committee intimated that it had not been able to arrange a conference with the Minister of Labour on the proposal to adopt a weekly rate of pay universally in lieu of the present award condition. The proposals of the Auckland Suburban Local ' Bodies Labourers' Union in this respect were not regarded with favour by the committee, but that the two additional holidays (other than the specified statutory ones) stipulated in the award' be granted between the Christmas and New Year periods at the end of December in each year. Revision of Salaries.—The annual revision was deferred until the board's special meeting to be held to determine its public works progress. In the meantime such adjustments as may be necessary to comply with awards are to be put into effect. Fire Board Levy.—The board's contribution to the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board has been assessed at £532 12/4 for the year ending March 31 next. This is an increase of £57 over last year's levy, caused mainly by the increased capital value of the district. H
