SUED FOR DEBT.
FORMER AIRWAYS PILOT. j ARRESTED ON STEAMER. A statement that he had earned nothing since May 24, when judgment was entered against him at Palmerston North for £40 4/1 on a judgment summons issued against him by Watson Bros., Limited, was made bv Commander Basil Adair Blytlie in the Magistrate's Court before Mr. W. R. McKean. when four iirms proceeded against hiin, one on a judgment summons, claiming to recover debts amounting to £299 1/9. The defendant was formerly chief pilot of Union Airways, Limited, and had been arrested under a writ of arrest on board the steamer Doric Star prior to that steamer leaving for England on Wednesday last. Hiving evidence on the judgment summons, defendant said he resigned from Union Airways on May 31 last,, having been employed by the company from January. 193(1. ITe first received £000 a year, and after April, 1937, about £720 a year, but he had never received £900 a year. His maximum salary had been £04 a month, and lie had made remittances of about £25 a month to his wife, who had been in England since January. ' Defendant said he had borrowed £00 from a. friend and had paid £71 for his passage on the Doric Star, and after his arrest had received a refund and paid hack the £00 he had l>orrowed. He had no banking account now The magistrate said it was clear that defendant had had some money that was his own. and he had also' admitted receiving from the shipping company an amount in excess of that which he owed the plaintiff, but had repaid a loan with it. Defendant, on the judgment summons, was ordered to pay £47 9/1 forthwith. in default seven weeks' imprisonment. Costs amountinT to #1 11/0 were also entered against him. On the three other claims judgment by confession was »'itered for thp total amount of £252 17/8. with costs £22 14/6.
