NUISANCE ALLEGED.
CHEMICAL WORKS FUMES,
REFERRED TO DEPARTMENT. An allegation that chemical fumes discharged from manure works at Otaliuliu polluted the atmosphere and created a nuisance was made by Mr. , G. Jackson, a member of the Otahuhu Borough Council las-t night. He said that although the works, were situated outside the borough the council was given power to act under tJhc Public Health Act, 1920, and he thought. something should be done about the matter. In other parts •of the world steps were, taken to purify, the fumes. Since the Drainage Commission had ruled that the Westfield drainage nuisance must be removed at the expense of the companies concerned he thought something should be done to remove the nuisance created by the fumes. Mr. ST. L. Atcheson said the. matter could be rectified, by the installation of machinery and he Considered the company should be made to bear the cost.
Mr. W. Cowper said there had been a departmental inquiry into the matter some years ago but it had failed to prove that the company was discharging a greater percentage of acid than allowed by law.
The Mayor, Mr. C. B. Petrie, M.P., said the question of this nuisance was an old.story and past councils had endeavoured without success to have the nuisance abated. Before the council could really act in the matter it had to prove that the company was discharging fumes contrary to law. ,
On the motion of Mr. .Taclcson it was decided to draw the attention of the Health Department to the excessive discharge of fumes from the works and urge that steps bo taken' to eliminate the nuisance created by the fumes.
