LAND DEVELOPMENT.
AIDING THE MAORIS. REVIEW BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph.—Fresn Association.) GISBORNE, Monday. A review of Maori land development activities was given by the acting Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. F. Langstone, at the native gathering at Waiomatatini yesterday for the ceremony of reopening the Porourangi meeting house.
Mr. Langstone stated that the number of schemes had been increased by the present Government from 75 to 120, comprising in all over SOO,OOO acres, of which 218,000 acres were actually under development .at the present time. A total of 1722 units had been sect led on the schemes, and 315S others were employed as workers and/or were dependents, totalling nearly 10,000. Here they had the essentials of a wonderful achievement, added the minister. Land which bad been unproductive had been brought into production, men who had been with out an occupation had been givet employment, and there was reall . prodigous production of the necessaries <•. life, were previously there had been idllands and idle people.
