FEIX UNDER TRAIN WHEELS. A railway guard, Mr. James Harper, single, aged 40, was killed at Wanganui on Saturday afternoon, states a Press Association "message from Wanganui. ' Mr. Harper, who was in charge, of; a train going to Marton, was boarding the guard's van when he slipped and fell beneath the wheels. He was alive when extricated, but died before the arrival of the ambulance. Mr. Harper was formerly a resident of Duncdin. He lia-3 been stationed at Wanganui for 12 years. CAB, SOMERSAULTS. Severe head injuries were suffered by Miss Barbara Hutchinson and Mr. Peter Murphy when they .were involved in a motor mishap in Wainui Road, Gisbornc, on Saturday, states a Press Association message from Gisbornc. Mi'. Murphy was driving a van in the direction of Wainui and was negotiating Peryer's Corner when the accident occurred. The van was turning the corner when it left the road, tlie wheels going into a- ditch at the side of the road. The vehicle turned three somersaults before finally coming to rest. Mr. Murphy j and- the passenger both received severe | head injuries and concussion, being re-1 moved to hospital. Their condition last j night was favourable. The victims had a fortunate escape from more serious injury as the solid hood of the van did not cave in when the vehicle was rolling. STRUCK BY WINCH HANDLE. Struck by the handle of a winch while playing on Orakei wharf yesterday afternoon, Alfred Andrew Xeal, 13-year-old son .of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Xeal, of Sehvyn Avenue, Kohimarama, suffered a : fracture of -the lower jaw and lacera- . tions to the face. After being attended by Dr. A. Dreifuss, he was taken to the Auckland Hospital by St. John ambulance. His condition to-day is fairly serious.
