UNUSUAL MISHAP.
CAR LANDS ON BARGE. CAREER OVER MERCER WHARF. Clearing a 10ft stretch of water after hurtling over the end of the* wharf at Mercer, a motor car containing two men nose-dived on to a "barge in the Waikato River early on Sunday morning. The driver, Mr. S. Tj. Lewis, of Feilding, had tendons of the left fore- 3 arm severed, and his companion, Mr. W. L. Menzies, of'Klmbolton, escaped with a shaking. j. The two men were returning from a 1 holiday in the north. The driver said ■ later that he did not notice, the sharp : turn south which the.road takes at the ] Mercer wharf. The full moon was shin- - ing in his face. The front' of the left dumb iron of • the car pierced the decking of the barge, ■ while the front of the right dumb iron caught against the corner formed by ! the sternboard and the decking. The : vehicle came to a standstill at an angle of about SO degrees to the, deck. The steering wheel was shattered in the hands of the driver, and the windscreen was broken. Mr. Menzies was catapulted into the hood of the ear, together with luggage. Mr. Lewis and Mr. Menzies scrambled out of the car and made their way to | the Mercer Hotel. Dr. F. W. Lumsden, !of Pukekohe, attended to Mr. Lewis," who was later taken to hospital. The car does not appear to have suffered extensive damage. Had it had a front bumper, it is thought, it would have completed th<y somersault and rolled into the river, which is about 10ft deep at this point. It will probably be, to-morrow, when the cranes have steam up, before the vehicle will be removed from its position. In all there were four barges moored together off the wharf. MARRIED COUPIiE HURT. A married couple, Mr." and Mrs. John Shaw, of Station Road, Penrose, are both in the Auckland Hospital, as the result of a collision between two motor cars at the corner of Green Lane and Wheturangi Roads on Saturday night. Mrs. Shaw, who was driving, suffered concussion and abrasions, and Mr. Shaw concussion and a possible fracture of the leg. They were taken to hospital by St. John ambulance, but their condition is not regarded" as serious. BROTHERS INJURED. Two brothers were hurt when the bicycle they were riding collided with a car in Chalmers Street, Avondalc, yes-, ! terday afternoon. Kenneth Owen Wis- | hart, aged 11, of Titirangi Road, New P Lynn, broke his right leg and suffered concussion, while his' brother, Warren Keith, also suffered concussion. j , The boys were attended by Dr. W. G. ( Carew, of Great North Road. Avondale, [ 'and were taken to the Auckland Hos- * pital in a St. John ambulance. Their condition is not serious.
