NEW SPEEDBOAT.
TO ATTACK RECORDS. DESIGNED BY LAWRENCE AND FRIEND. CALLED EMPIRE DAY. Lawrence of Arabia, and 1 his closest friend Edward Spurr, a Bradford engineer, designed a streamlined speedboat with which they hoped to capture the world's records.
The boat, the first all-metal speedboat ever made is now ready and will be christened on May 24. It will be called Empire Day and will be. piloted! by Mr. Spurr.
"I hope to attack the® class record first—held by Italy—at Lake Windermere in about six weeks," said Mr. Spurr this week. "I shall have a four-cylinder super-charged engine. The 400 kilo gramme record stands at 70 now—l hope Ito do 00 miles per hour.
"The boat is 16ft long and is made of light aircraft-type aluminium. It's cost me £7000 in research and experiments over four years," said Sir. Spurr. "There's not-another boat like it in the world."
