NEW DISTRICTS.
DENTAL SUPERVISION. CLINICS FOR CHILDREN. PROGRESS ACCELERATED. Owing to the rapid expansion of the Xew Zealand schools dental service, the two largest dental districts, Auckland I and Wellington, are being reduced in size, and a new district, to be known as South Auckland, was officially established to-day. This district, with, Hamilton as its administrative centre, comprises the Waikato, East Coast, Rotorua, Taupo and Taranaki areas, and portions of the King Country. Dr. R. M. S. Taylor, D.D.S., who has been for eight years an instructor on the staff of the dental training college in Wellington, has been appointed supervisor in South Auckland, and has begun his new duties by undertaking a tour of inspection of the school dental clinics in his territory prior to developing his headquarters organisation. As a result of the move the Auckland dental district will in future consist of the Auckland Central, Thames-Tauranga and North Auckland health districts, and will continue to be controlled from Auckland city by Mr. F. B. Rice, D.D.S., district dental superintendent. Besides enabling the authorities to cope more effectively with the work at present in hand, the change is regarded as a phase of the Government s effort to link up all schools with the dental clinic system within the next few years. This involves a big expansion, as half the schools are at present o-.itside the scope of the service after a period .of development which covers 17 years. "The Government believes that millions of pounds -would be saved by' giving attention to the teeth, diet and physical development of the children," said the Minister of Health, the Hon. P. Fraser, early this month.
