THREE ON NIAGARA.
STEWARDS SENT TO GAOL WANTED TO RETURN HOME. On tin arrival of the Niagara from Sydney till- morning three c\ stewardifroni the liner Or ford were arrested on a charge of stowing away on hoard the mail .steamer at Sydney on Thursday la st. A ! 1 three pleaded guilty. The licensed were:— lohti Keelian (20), Reginald '■ illicit Oraham (21), and Lawrence Valor I'hiirnian (27). It was stated I»y Sul>-Inspect or l'o\ tlx:I the three men, l>y ininl ing with the passengers on the Niagara at Sidney, were aide to stow away. The ship cleared Sydney at 4 p.m., and three hours later they surrendered to the officers and frankly admitted having stowed away. They had ;i/l among them. "The three acciiseii were all stewards on the s.s. Orford, anil deserted that ship in Australia last April, thinking that conditions in Australia were better than in England, where tliev he long, 1 added Mr. Fox, "Thev decided they would try to get hack to Englnnd. and this was the lir-t stage of the re turn journey. They al] say they don't want to stay in New Zealand. The shipping company is asking that in each case the amount of the fare, £7. should lie paid, hut there is little prospect of getting it."
"It looks as though the i-hipping company w ill June to exercise more care in allowing person* on hoard vessels prior to mailing," remarked Mr. \Y. K. Me Kean. S.M., who sent the three men to prison for 21 days.
