THRILLING.

HANDICAP FINISH.

JACK TAR'S SUCCESS.

BIG JUMPING EVENT.

ROYAL MIMIC, LEADING, FAIXS

There was a surprise in store for backers in tie York Handicap, two outsiders returning dividend*. Jack Tar, the winner, had raced rather unluckily in hack company for eome time past, filling minor places on numerous occasions. On Monday last he made a good showing in the Cornwall Handicap, being one of the leaders into the straight, where he faded out. To-day he soon ran to the front and stayed there, although Erndale was with him when they came.into line. The latter appreciated the heavy going. Kilonea ran a, good race, and looked likely a few yards from home, but was quite unable to-bridge the gap between her and the winner. Although fourth, she was right in line with Erndale andMalagigi, the judge being the only person who could separate the three of them. Malagigi, as ueual, was a good way back early, but finished on solidly. Cheval d« Volee, Flood Tide, Valamito, Valmint and Waitaka were the first to become prominent, and racing past the sevenfurlong post, Jack Tar took charge from Enge, Day Wind, Tybalt, Light Comedy, Valmint, Cheval de Volee and Kilonsa. A little later Valamßo could be eeen moving up fast on the outside. Jack Tar was joined by Erndale crossing the top, with Light Comedy, Kilonsa, Tybalt, Knight of Australia, Valmint, Day Wind' .Malagigi and Flood Tide nest. Jack Tar and Erndale were firet round the home turn from Kilonsa, Valmint, Valamito, Cheval de Volee, Tybalt and Flood Tide. Jack Tar then drew out, only to be challenged by Erndale, with Kilonsa coming through on the rails. Malagigi alfo joined in 30yds from home, but Jack Tar held on and beat Erndale by a neck, with Malagigi a head further back, a similar distance in front of Kilonsa, Enge, Cheval de Volee, Tybalt, Valamito, Knight of Australia, Gay Rebel and Gold Vaafe were next.

Doable Completed. . The favourite for tbe Tamaki Steeplecltaae, Power Chief, did not jump as well as he did when be won on Thursday. He got into several of his fences closely, and lost ground. He was in front on top of the hill the last time, but faulty jumping at the two obstacles there soon saw him near the rear of the field, and he was never able to make up his ground. Kinkle won easily at the finish. The latter ran right up to his first day's form, while the supporters of the second favourite, London, got a poor run for their money, as he came to grief at the first fence, where United also lost his rider. Going up the hill the first time, Ground Swell was in charge from Power Chief, Kinkle, Bells of Bow and Killadar. At the double in front of the stand Killadar was just showing the way from Belle of Bow and Power Chief, this trio being about four lengths in front of Kinkle. Ground Swell was pulled up before reaching the fence by the old mile post. Power Chief led up the hill the last time a length in front of Kinkle, who was two lengths ahead of Bells of Bow. with Killadar next. Power Chief jumped badly at the two on the ton of the hill, :»P* Bella of Bow led down the hill a gjSSSP* °* l iii front of Kiiikle, with |ptßMg*V following. Six Lengths Victory. It is many years since one horse won three races at the same meeting at Ellerelie, but Full of Scotch, who was made favourite for the Orakei Hurdles, performed this feat, having won the Penrose and. Panmure Hurdles on the two previous da ye. Despite his steadier of 11.2, he went.to the front about six furlongs from home and, though challenged by Innees Lad entering the straight, he jumped the last hurdle well in front and went on to score nearly as easily as he did on Wednesday. Inness Lad ran a good race, while Professional will see a better day. Bass, Salesman, Chief Lap, Full of Scotch, and High Star raced to the first fence in that order, but Salesman made a very faulty jump, and Chief Lap fell. Passing the stand, High Star took comamnd with Bass, the pair being about two lengths clear of Full of Scotch, with Professional, Salesman, Inness Lad and Celtic Lad following in that order. Going alon<» the back. Full of Scotch opened up a gap of about three lengths from High Star, who was a similar distance ahead of Inness Lad, with Professional leading the others. Inness Lad then commenced to move up, and passing the half mile post, was within five lengths of Full of Scotch. He was almost on terms at the home turn, the pair being eight lengths clear of High Star, with Professional two lengths further back, lull of Scotch outjuniped Inness Lad at the last obstacle, and went on to beat him by six. lengths, with Professional I a further three lengths away. High Star was fourth, with Celtic Lad and Bass next.

Sensational Steeplechase. Smilin , Thru ran his best race to date when he accounted for the Winter Steeplechase. He was always handily placed and once over the last fence drew out to win comfortably. The favourite, \ alpeen, had every chance, except that at the last fence, where Royal Mimic fell, he lost some ground in avoiding him. Lucidus also put up a good performance and ran his usual honest race. <.oing to the water jump Lucidus, Royal iMinnc and Valpeen were in front and at the fence Royal Limond ran off and Irish Comet dislodged his rider. Irish Lomet was quickly remounted and Royal Limond was taken back, jumped the hinVe c ? ntinued on. Going up the hill the hrst time Royal Mimic was in V om l h 7 Lucidus - Smilin' Thru betwSrJw Lad \ Thcre was not much bttv> Bcn this quartet, while Valpeen was eight lengths further back. a simil ar di * tance in front of Irish Come't When they came round ag ain Koyal Windsor Lad and Lucidus took the fir* fence of the double almost on terms with Smilin' Thru a length away fol-' towed by Valpeen, Irish Comet and Royal Limond. Windsor Lad ran off at the second fence of the double and was pulled up. Royal Mimic led up the hill the last time from Lucidus, Irish Comet, Smilin' Thru and Valpeen. Roval Mimic was first into the home stretch from Lucidus and Smilin' Thru (together), while two iengths further back came Valpeen, about three lengths in front of Irish Comet. Royal Mimic came to grief at the last fence and Smilin , Thru went on to win by four lengths from Lucidus, who beat Valpeen by six lengths. Irish Comet was fourth, with Royal Limond well back.

Erination Falls. The Campbell Hurdle Race was robbed of a good deal of interest when the favourite, Erination, came to grief at the second fence, where.Mia Acrea also fell. The latter was in front, and it appeared as though Erination fell over him. Kilberis ran his best race for several months when he won the event. He was always handily placed and, once over the last fence, he stalled off King's Archer to win nicely. The latter was well back until the last three furlongs, and he just failed to overhaul the winner. Mia Acrea, Mia Lume, Lady England and Kilberis were the leaders over the first fence while, as previously stated, Erination and Mia Acrea, fell at the second. Kilberis waa in charge passing the stand from Mia Lume, Killadar, Lady England and King's Archer. Mia Lume took charge along the back, but a faulty jump caused him to lose his place. Lady England then became the pilot, and she led into the straight from Killadar, Kilberis and King's Archer, the quartet being practically on terms. Once over the last Kilberis drew away and, stalling off King's Archer, won by a length, with Killadar two and a half lengths back. Lady England was fourth and Mia Lume
