The Public Works Department lias had definite instructions to proceed with an up-to-date survey of the proposed railway route between Taneatua and Opotiki and a start on the survey work will be made at an earlv date."
This information was conveyed in a letter received at to-day's meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce from Mr. S. Baker, actin" Engineer-in-Chief and Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department. The letter was in reply to correspondence initiated by the chamber pressing for tho closing of the present rail gap.
