LOST THEIR PIES.

CITY WORKERS HUNGRY. VAN INVOLVED IN SMASH. Somewhere in the city to-day hungry men and women, rushing into their favourite cafeteria for the usual hurried lunch, found the house in short supply. Travelling citywards with a load of pies and small goods for consumption in city tea rooms., a light van belonging to Hill Bros., food specialists, of Queen's Arcade, was passing a small sports car driven up Khyber Pass by Air. H. B. Hughes. The van became jammed between the car and a tramcar approaching from the opposite direction. The force exerted on the side of the lighter vehicle was. terrific. The whole side of the van, from the driver's cab backward, was torn off. The door, ripped from its hinges, sailed over the top of Mr. Hughes' car and landed on the road beyond. Both drivers fortunately escaped injury.

The most serious aspect of the accident, however, was. the loss of the workers' lunches. Pies, cakes, sandwiches, beetroot and eggs bestrewed the roadway for forty or fifty yards around the place of impact. Mr. Hughes.' car was spattered with mashed-up pies and pieces of beetroot. Broken woodwork from the side of the van and glass from the door window was scattered from kerb to kerb, and a man was kept employed sweeping the debris out of the tram rails.

The small oar ended up on the footpath with a dented front mudguard. The front cab ol the tranvcar was badly smashed, but the driver was not hurt. It contihued. on its outward journey to the Epsom barn. /
