AUCKLAND TROTS.

WINTER MEETING. THE FIRST DAY. GOOD RESPONSE BY OWNERS. ° I The response made by owners yesterday when acceptances closed for the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club's winter fixture was excellent, and of the 15U horses handicapped no fewer than 133 wcie paid up for. an average of 19 per rue. As 30 have been paid up for in the .Mangelc Handicap the event has been divided. l'lie stake has been increased to t'.ou for each division, and the divisions will be treated as separate races. The first will be decided on the opening day and the second on the concluding day. The club could not have hoped for a better acceptance than received for the chief (vent, the Adams Memorial. The whole of tin' 15 handicapped were paid up lor. and the mile and a half race looks like providing a contest in keeping with its importance. Next to the Auckland Trotting Cup and Great Northern Trotting Derby no race decided at Alexandra Park arouses more interest than the Adams .Memorial Cup.

lu tin- approaching contest the Takanini liaim-r F. •!. Smith holds a strong hand. He has. three l epi i\-entatives. Crocus, Ironside and Ncivie's Last. All three have pi uved themselves capable of pacing 12 fin longs brilliantly, and at present there is bound to be a strong inclination to favour the stable combination. Crocus is on the limit, and well-positioned to win, while Ironside, 24yds, was responsible for high-class ctl'orts at the Championship meeting at, Addington. although he did not succeed in winning outright. .Smith's third barrel, Ncivie's Last, is on 48yds. ami he has been set a stiff task, even admitting that he is very brilliant at a mile and a half.

On tin- limit with Crocus are Nawton Fairish. Noble Prince and Proletarian, and of the trio Nawton Parrish will have admirers. Proletarian is very speedy and only h.s to begin right to keep the opposition stepping. Star Pronto, 12yds, must ■lie considered. He ie one of the best free-logged pacers we have had. and should thi- track Ijc at all on the slow side he will lie a very hard horse to beat. Unfortunately lie doesn't always pace without a ini»take. The form of Fernbrook Lass has hardly been good enough to warrant ticking her off as the likely winner, and the rj.mic can lie said of Prince Pedro, Willie l)eiby. Auto Machine and Lady Fame. On the other hind Our McKinney. Cold Pledge and Kewpie*s Triumph have out.-ide chances. The event presents a very open aspect, but the early fancies mav b ( . Crocus.
