TEN-MINUTE PARKING.
LOSSES ALLEGED.
KARANOAHAPE ROAD AREA,
Roundlv condemning tlie City Council for its 'attitude towards submissions against the 10-minute parking restrictions, shopkeepers in Karnnjrnliape Road stated yesterday, through their Husinees Promotion Society, that business losses were being canse<l owing to diversion of trade to other parts where the parking regulations were not so eevere. "We received to-day what amounts to an llth-hour repentance message from the council, telling us that the matter was under review," stated Mr. E. E. Kitchener, on behalf of the executive. "Wβ are forced to the conclusion that ;hie may not altogether be divorced rom the fact that the elections will be held next week." Mr. Kitchener said that in the face of the restrictive regulations imposed, property valuations had been maintained, in some instances increased, thus providing a further source of revenue for the council. "Business men in Karangahape Road believed that, in all the circumstances, the City Council would co-operate with them to maintain their returns," he continued, "but they have been sadly disappointed. They believe they have been treated in a moet cavalier fashion." Unfair Discrimination. In a letter to the council on February 23 it was pointed out that a limited parking allowance of 10 or 20 minutes, even, was tantamount to total prohibition for motorist-shoppere, who might reasonably be expected to occupy half an hour to complete their purchases. "In our opinion, it is unfair to impose restrictions in one place, unless and until the obligation of the City Council to provide alternative parking places is fulfilled," the letter stated. . The reply wae an acknowledgment of the letter and the statement that the council ordered it to be "received." Further representations were made, and a letter received from the council yesterday stated that the whole question oi the provision of parking places and pedestrian crossings wa3 under review.
