WESTFIELD MARKETS.
FEWER COWS AND HEIFERS. i CALVES SELL SLOWLY. Beef sold at firm rates on the We&tfield fat stock markets to-day, ox being quoted at last week's prices, ranging up to 30/ per 1001b. The sale was brisk with keen bidding from a rill 1 bench of buyers, and definite signs of improvement appeared.
The yarding of steers was the largest for some weeks, and included some exceptional quality. One prize bullock made £16 10/. compared with last week's top price of £14 and £14 15/ at the previous sale. A decline in the number of cows and heifers offered was responsible for the keen bidding. The top price of £16 10/ was realised for the best of a line of 16 prime bullocks sold on account of Messrs. I'rewin Bros.. Marohema. No other ii'ie on the market approached this price. The next best, a truck of eight from Tapuwae Estate, Poro-o-taroa, making up to £13 12/6. The sale of calves was very slow, though one outstanding black runner made £8 15/. Beef. —Our yarding of beef was less tl»an an average one. Competition was keen, with values very firm at late quotations. Extra choice ox sold to 39/ per IQPIb; choice and prime ox, 34/ to 38/; ordinary and plain, 27/ to 33/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 31/ to 36/; ordinary cowbeef. 23/ to 30/. Extra heavy prime steers ranged in price up to £16 10/; heavy prime steers, £14 to £14 15/; lighter prime steers. £12 to £13 15/; light prime steers, £10 to £11 15/; small and unfinished steers, £7 10/ to £9 10/; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £10 to £10 17/6; heavy prime cows and heifers. £8 to £9 15/; lighter prime cows and heifers, £7 to £7 17/6; light prime cows and heifers. £5 10/ to £6 17/6; other killable cows, £3 15/ to £5 5/.
Dalgety and Company, Limited. Beef.—Our offering of beef totalled 135 head, comprising 10 stee>« and 125 cows and heifers, against 198 liead last week. Demand was good throughout and we have to report a keen sale at firm late rates.
