The British team to play Rumania in the first louud of the 1938 Davis Cup competition is:- D. \V. Butler. (.'. M. Jones. K. A. Shaves and R H. L>. Wilde. Only one of this quartet has represented Britain before in the Davis Cup. Wilde, who was in Xew Zealand in 1934 with F. J. Perry and H. G. X. Abel, partnered ('. ]•'.. Hare in 1936 when they reached the Wimbledon final, where G. I*. Hughes and C. R. D. Tuckey beat them, o—4. :;-U. 7—o, β-l. tV-4. Among the ■victims or' Hare and Wilde, who were not a "seeded" pair, were Jones and Shayee, whom they defeated in straight sets. When tlie former turned the tables on Hughes and Tuckey in the 1937 British hardcourt doubles at Bournemouth they were "tipped'' to play in the doubles of last year's challenge round. As Hare took part in both singles. Tin-key, howover, was chosen to partner Wilde against America in the Davis Cup final. Hughes had announced his retirement even before he and Tiiekey lost their title in the 1937 Wimbledon final to J. (.;. Budge and C. G. Mako, I "niter! States. The last-named pair heat Wilde and Tuckey in the cup doubles, 6—3, 7 — o, 7—n. 12—10. When United States overwhelmed Britain last year in the challenge round-of the Davis Cup by four rubbers to one, the losing side comprised H. W. Austin and 0, K. Hare (singles), Wilde and Tuckey (doubles). Britain had held the Cup since lf>33. when Perry. H. W. Austin. Lee and Hughes beat H. Coehet, A. Merlin, J. Borotra and J. Brugnon. Austin lost one single to Coehet and a-c Borotra and Brugnon were victorious in the doubles the winning margin was three rubbers to two. The Frenchmen had won the trophy in Ifr26 against the Americans at Philadelphia.
