NEW NUMBERS.

ADDRESSES CHANGED.

MUCH CONFUSION CAUSED., TRIALS OF THE POSTMEN. • Quite a number of people in suburban Auckland have changed their addresses of late. It would perha(>« be more correct to say that their addresses have been changed for them, as the Auckland City Council's campaign for the renumbering of houses is in full swing. It ha 6 caused a good deal of confusion, poetmen on their delivery rounds have to study their walk-books assiduously, and milkmen and taxi-drivers are having more than an average share of trouble.

People who have lived for many years at No. 12 in a street may now find that I their home is numbered 24, and if a visitor calls at 12, there may l>e considerable trouble in finding out the new address.

The case was mentioned yesterday of a. resident in Bassett Road. Remuera. When lie had his home built there 28 years ago the number was 59. He has not moved in the meantime, but his house number has gone up to 121 as the result of other houses being built in tile locality.

Fortunately for inquirers most people know something of their neighbours, but in the case of boarders at a house a real difficultv has arisen.

The new numbering system has been welcomed by the Post and Telegraph Department, which has the onerous task of seeing that telegrams and letters are correctly delivered. It is considered that the change was necessary, and that it will eventually be in the best inter|ests of everybody. It is regarded as |a temporary difficulty, and one that I will soon be overcome.

In addition a number of streets in the city and suburb* are to l>e renamed in order to obviate duplicated names, and this may also rdd a temporary difficulty for some people.

The fact that the recent issue of a, new telephone directory in Auckland has not synchronised with the renuni-j bering of houses has caused comment, but the Department points out that the directory has to come out on a scheduled date, and it could not be held back. j | The officials draw attention to a j clause in the general instructions pub-j lislied in the directory which points out that subscrilx-rs should promptly notify tho local office in writing of any additions or alterations required in the next | reprint of the telephone directory. j
